The all female Mountain Inspired course, Introduction to Scottish Mountaineering aims to turn the keen winter hillwalker into a winter mountaineer, combining practical instruction with journeying up and down some of the finest Scottish mountaineering terrain. We will be ascending the Winter Mountains by more challenging routes; developing techniques and judgement along the way.
How to plan a winter mountaineering journey using weather and avalanche forecasts.
Efficient and safe movement on steep snow and mixed mountain terrain with ice axe and crampons.
How to navigate in the mountains on complex ground and in poor conditions.
Basic use of a rope to safe guard unforeseen problems.
Winter decision making in steep ground in ascent and descent.
Experience with axe and crampons would be very useful on this Mountain Inspired course, as would a good level of summer hill walking fitness. This will help you to get the most out of the course and to cope with what at times, can be challenging conditions. The days can be long and demanding but as with all our Scottish winter courses enthusiasm and determination are the key. This course is ideal for those people who have previously attended a Scottish Winter Hillwalking course.
